Have you ever been asked, "How are you feeling?" and totally drawn a blank? Or perhaps you notice your heart pounding or your stomach tightening, but you’re not sure whether you’re feeling anxious, angry, or just tired.

This disconnect has a name: "alexithymia". Often referred to as 'emotional blindness', it is not a mental illness or lack of emotion but a trait defined by difficulty identifying, naming and expressing feelings.

Recognising the Signs of Alexithymia

Alexithymia is a spectrum. Many people experience emotions strongly in their bodies but have difficulty translating those bodily signals into words.

Physicalising emotion: feeling stress, sadness or anger mainly as physical symptoms (eg tension headaches, chronic fatigue or digestive upset).
Limited emotional vocabulary: Using binary descriptors such as “fine”, “good” or “bad” to describe inner states when asked.

Confusing physical sensations: Trouble distinguishing an emotional reaction (e.g., anxiety) from a physical state (e.g., hunger or adrenaline).
Logical, fact-based thinking: A strong preference for dealing with external events, schedules, and data rather than personal feelings or introspection.
Trouble in social or intimate situations: Feeling out of place or confused when others express complex emotional needs.

How Can Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) Support You?

Traditional talk therapy often asks you to analyse past trauma or express deep, nuanced emotions, which can be overwhelming and frustrating if you have alexithymia.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) takes a very different, future-orientated approach.

SFH combines the latest neuroscience, practical psychotherapy and hypnosis to allow emotional regulation without having to analyse complex feelings in the moment.

Downregulating the default mode network: Stress and overwhelm keep the fight-or-flight system on high alert and flood the body with adrenaline. Guided trance is activating the parasympathetic nervous system, which relaxes the physical tension that often conceals emotion.
Solution Focus, Not Problem Focus: SFH asks what you would like your future to be instead of why you feel as you do. Sessions focus on small, positive actions that you can take right now, such as improving sleep, setting up daily routines and managing stress.
Rebuilding mind-body awareness: Trance assists the intellect and subconscious to connect in a calm, safe state. This gradual, gentle neuroplasticity over time helps to decrease general anxiety, making it much easier to process internal physical cues.
